Classrooms
Capital Montessori, on Kingston Hill
The location of Capital Montessori is a safe, secure site with beautiful, natural surroundings. The school site is far away from any main roads, and the children are always supervised by our staff - indoors and outside. Our colourful and peaceful classrooms, Fernlea and Kowhai have been carefully laid out to create a warm, inviting and friendly atmosphere for the children - to stimulate activity and imagination!
These are places that children love to be and they take active responsibility for keeping their classrooms clean, neat and tidy. It’s all part of the Montessori approach to learning. We’re very proud of our school, and believe that Capital Montessori offers children one of the best pre-school environments in New Zealand.
The Outdoors
The outdoor environment is a vital part of every child's learning, allowing the development of movement skills, observation, curiosity and exploration. We've developed flower and vegetable gardens for each classroom including worm farms and compost. There is also a small wilderness area with native plants and trees. We have a large play area with soft floor matting, swings, balls, climbing and sliding equipment where children learn about balance, co-ordination and sports skills.
Out and about
We believe that discovering and learning should have no boundaries, so throughout the year we organise days out for the children. In Wellington, we’re lucky enough to have some great destinations to visit, like Te Papa and Capital E. We also ask parents or caregivers to join us - it keeps adult and child ratios low, and the adults have a great day out too. For transport we’ll travel either by private vehicles, public or chartered buses, whatever is most appropriate to the day’s outing.
A pre-school of many cultures
We think it's important to reflect the diverse cultural backgrounds of the children. So Diwali, Matariki, St Patrick’s Day, Christmas and other occasions are all recognised. When there are celebrations, parents, caregivers and extended family are invited to the school to take part, and the children learn about these cultural celebrations with specific classroom activities.
